Scholarship Awards

Glenford Hyatt
2005

My GPA in the spring was 2.9, and I was accepted into the "Inroads" program. They specialize in giving internships to high performance minorities in mostly corporate positions. You have to have at least a 2.75 to qualify and a Engineering or business major of some kind as well. The company I am interning with is Publix Supermarkets.

I work for their central information systems department in downtown Lakeland, FL. My official title around the office is a Test Analyst/Computer Programmer and that is pretty much the core of what I am learning around here.

With my major being Computer Engineering and a minor in Computer Science.

I was in Tennessee, this summer for the first LDI National Leadership conference Inroads has ever planned and attended various workshops based on communication skills, business writing and composition, IT infrastructure and the stock market, and various other topics. We stayed at the Gaylord Palms Resort (biggest hotel outside of Vegas in America) and about 3500 interns from across the country attended.

I'm working 45 hours a week and start school August 20th. When I get back to school, I may transfer to work as a bagger for Publix since all their employee's get stock in the company once their an associate for more than 6 months…. And college students get tuition reimbursement if they work at least 10 hours a week for Publix.

At school, I'm taking classes on circuit boards and database programs such as sequel and SAP. These skills are essential in the real world IT positions I am seeking.

The internship comes every summer till I graduate and upon graduation, my company I worked for is suppose to offer me a full-time position so I may move to Lakeland, Atlanta, Tennessee, or Deerfield Beach (those are the major Information system department locations) for a few years after I graduate. But I still do have interests in working for NASA in the long run as well.

“Whatever you vividly imagine, ardently desire, sincerely believe, and enthusiastically act upon…must inevitably come to pass!” ~ Paul J. Meyer

When I first heard this quote, I said “WOW”!  Since that time I decided that it would be the basis of my dreams.  Every time that I hear it, it reminds me that I am in control of my success and my future.

It is my view that college is the avenue in which many of my dreams will blossom.  College will impact my future greatly for it is where I will receive the preparatory skills and knowledge for a career in my chosen field of study.  After attaining a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Accounting, I will then pursue a Master’s Degree in Business Administration.  Eventually, my greatest desire is to become an entrepreneur.  Yes, I want to develop my own business as a Certified Public Accountant.

I was accepted at Florida A&M University and Florida State University.  However, I have chosen to attend Florida A&M because they have a remarkable School of Business and Industry (SBI) to which I have been accepted and plan to receive my Master’s in Business Administration.

Plans for Educational Support
I have received a Florida Medallion Scholars Award and I have met academic eligibility for the Florida Bright Futures Scholarship Program for the 2007-2008 academic year. This award is based on my course work and grade point average from the first half of my senior year and my SAT scores reported through January 31, 2007.  My weighted grade point average is 4.033 and my unweighted GPA is 2.966.  Out of approximately 1000 students at Coral Reef High School, I am ranked number 381 as of September 6, 2006.  Other scores are as follows:  College Board SAT,  December 2006, 600 on Math, January 2007, 490 on Reading and January 2007, 510 on Writing; the ACT composite scores February 2007, average 22; English, 22; Math, 22; Reading, 23; and Science, 21.
